Obituary for Dr. Raymond W. Francis

Dr. Raymond W. Francis of DuBois, PA passed away peacefully at his home on December 29, 2018 at the age of 86 from natural causes. He was born on December 17, 1932, in Erie, Pennsylvania, the youngest of four sons of Raymond and Dorothy Francis. He was preceded in death by his brothers, his wife of 50 years, Marjorie Cummiskey of Bradford, PA in 2007, and by his youngest son, Daniel, of Hummelstown, PA in September 2018.

Dr. Francis completed his undergraduate degree in the ROTC program at Gannon College and his Master’s Degree in Psychology from DePaul University in Chicago. He served the next two years as an officer in the U.S. Army, stationed in Heidelberg, Germany. Following military service, his family moved to western NY where he trained as a psychologist at the Children’s Center in Jamestown and the Gowanda State Hospital while attending a Ph.D. program at the University of Buffalo, earning his doctoral degree in 1968. His family moved to Ridgway, PA in 1967, where he served as a psychologist at the Elk County (Dickinson) Psychiatric Center until moving to DuBois in 1978. He was a consultant for the Riverside Corporation for several years, then opened private offices in DuBois and Clearfield, where he worked tirelessly until his retirement in 2014.

Dr. Francis was known for his total dedication to others in both his personal and professional life. In addition to raising seven children, he dedicated substantial portions of time to the training of other psychologists, performing pro-bono work for those without resources, and consulting for numerous Catholic churches in the Erie Diocese. In 1994, he was awarded a Papal Medal for his service to the church by Pope John Paul II.

He is survived by his children, Suzanne (John) O’Neil in Columbia, MD; Joseph (Nancy) Francis in Virginia Beach, VA; Raymond Patrick (Karen) Francis in Cranberry Township, PA; John Francis in DuBois, PA; Mary Elizabeth (Harry) Stoltz in DuBois, PA; David (Jodie) Francis in Fort Belvoir, VA; and daughter-in-law Michele Francis in Hummelstown, PA. He is also survived by 23 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

His legacy as a selfless healer lives on through the lives he touched. To his family, he will forever be our beloved father and grandfather.

Friends and family will be received Friday, January 4, 2019 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the Adamson Funeral Chapel, Inc. in DuBois, PA, with a scriptural wake service beginning prior to the visitation at 1:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, January 5, 2019 at 10 a.m. from the St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church with Msgr.
